We arrived in Montsant in 2002, initially acquiring two hectares of old Garnatxa Peluda vineyards in a place in Capçanes that we fell deeply in love with, as well as our two children. Our goal has always been to preserve and improve the natural heritage of the estate, creating a wine project that expresses the landscape and biodiversity of the environment, turning it into a unique ecosystem. The beauty of this amphitheater and the magic of the place captivated us, which is why we decided to build a bioclimatic winery integrated into the landscape.
In 2004, twenty years ago, the first bottles of our first and most iconic wine, Teixar , were released on the market, initially producing 3,500 bottles. In 2007, Teixar was already certified organic and in 2015 it became a Qualified Estate Wine of Catalonia , the highest distinction a Catalan wine can aspire to, being the first in the DO Montsant and the fourth in Catalonia to obtain this recognition. Currently, we have 35 hectares planted with organic vineyards on a 130-hectare estate, which includes an old hotel built on an 18th-century farmhouse. It is said that this farmhouse, dating from 1795, was the birthplace of Joan Barceló i Anguera, known as Carrasclet.
From this winery, where Edgar Domènech, from the second generation of the family, is taking the reins of management, our Teixar is distinguished by a Mediterranean microclimate of coast and mountain, stony limestone soils with slopes of 10 to 35% and a north-south orientation. We have old hairy Grenache vineyards, with very low production, managed with organic and biodynamic viticulture, producing wines suitable for vegans. We work with hairy Grenache maintaining its original phenotype, highlighting the biodiversity of our forest environment and our vineyards as a unique interactive ecosystem for the protection of fauna, flora and microorganisms.
At Vinyes Domènech we are committed to sustainability as a circular project, where each process and scenario is designed to reduce the consumption of natural resources and the emission of greenhouse gases.
In recent years, we have placed special interest in offering a botanical vision of our estate, seeking to restore the lost connection between people and nature, starting with the knowledge of our plants. We are also firmly committed to wine tourism, offering visits that ensure a total connection with nature and wine, transporting the visitor to the landscape, the sun, the vineyard, an ancestral variety and the values of this land and our people.
Teixar de Vinyes Domènech comes from the name of a place in Capçanes known as Font del Teixar, three-hectare plots located in a protected natural space, of high beauty and ecological value, between the Llaberia and Montalt mountains. Deeply concerned about climate change and persistent droughts, we have begun to implement the keyline system to optimize water resources, avoid erosion, loss of soil fertility and distribute rainwater naturally, working especially to enhance the microbiology of our soils.
Thank you for these twenty years!
